I want to repay a portion of what the universe has given me. For all the songs I’ve listened to, all the works of art I’ve gathered inspiration from, all of the poems I’ve enjoyed while eating breakfast before work.
It wouldn’t be fair to spend my whole life receiving and never giving back. I can give back by creating things – songs or poems or anything at all.
For me a piece of writing is either a success or failure depending on whether or not I FINISH the work. The quality of the work is irrelevant. The content doesn’t matter – at least not to the universe – what’s important is that when I make something, I add it to the dish on my side of the weighing scale.
It’s like planting a few young saplings for every tree that you chop down.
I’ll never be able to repay the gift of life, or the gift of love, or the gifts of wonderful inspiration that I get from other artists. But there’s no use in feeling guilty about it. No use in pretending that I ever will pay it all back. Only thing I can do is be grateful. Just be grateful and keep chipping away at my own little works, in my own little corner of the big wide world.
