Documenting the Process: Thursday, April 16th

I’m fascinated by the idea of artists who “document the process.” Artists who make a work out of a work.

We all like to see behind the scenes. And we’re all accessible to each other, more and more every day, faster and faster, instantly.

One of my favorite authors, Hugh Howey, keeps a running tally on his blog that shows all of the stories that he’s currently working on. It shows how far along he is with those stories, and how many words he projects to write for each one.

I appreciate things like that – the personal touch   letting people in to the process. I want to hear how you wrote your story, how you felt while you were writing it, and how you managed to find the time.

Casey Niestat is a videographer and youtuber. For his most recent VLOG project, he’s making a video every day. I can’t stop watching his videos, I’m addicted. The videos are raw and honest: Casey lets me into his office and into his home. I share in intimate moments with his wife and his baby. He shares everything. He trusts me.

Privacy and Secrecy are decreasing in direct proportion to the advances of technology. Artists who ride this wave, instead of trying to swim against it, are going to thrive and prosper.
