Writing is Complicated: Wednesday, April 22nd

“A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.”

-Thomas Mann

I agree 100%. I’ve never had a harder time putting words on the page than when I sat down and decided to “take my writing seriously.”

Another podcaster that I listen to, Chistopher Ryan PHD, says that a good way to ruin the thing you love is to turn it into your work.

I don’t agree with him though. Anyway I really hope he’s wrong. I’d rather believe the rosy old platitude, “if you love what you do then you’ll never work a day of your life.”

But I suppose I’ll have to find out for myself. I certainly can’t say right now, from experience, whether one side is truer than the other. I hope one day I can.

The more and more I struggle with writing short stories, the more I respect the craft for what it is. These days I watch TV shows from a new angle. I read novels differently. I appreciate the art of storytelling anywhere and everywhere I see it – in an ad, in a youtube video, in a Facebook profile. I’m fascinated by what makes a good story and also what makes a good storyteller.

There are a million books out there about the structure of story. I’ve started down that rabbit hole, and I don’t plan to come back until I have the secrets.
